Abstract:
Perutz argued in this article that the primary reason that Avery, MacLeod, and McCarty's 1944 paper met with such skepticism or indifference was molecular biologists' preoccupation with the widely held notion that genes were made of proteins. This article was also reprinted as "How the Secret of Life Was Discovered," in "I Wish I'd Made You Angry Earlier: Essays on Science, Scientists, and Humanity." Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, 1998: 181-189.
